Oral pathology focuses on identifying and diagnosing diseases or abnormal changes affecting the tissues of the mouth and surrounding structures. We provide careful evaluations, clear explanations, and personalized recommendations based on our findings. When a biopsy is appropriate, we perform the procedure with local anesthesia and focused techniques designed to minimize discomfort and support healing.

Your visit begins with a focused examination of the area of concern. Depending on the location and type of lesion, we may use advanced imaging, including CBCT or intraoral scanning, which can provide useful information.

Our goal is to determine whether the area appears benign, suspicious, or requires tissue sampling for a more accurate diagnosis. We explain our findings in straightforward language and discuss your options so you understand what may happen next.

If a biopsy is recommended, we will explain why it may be helpful, how the procedure works, and what to expect during follow-up.

An oral biopsy allows a pathologist to examine a small tissue sample and can help establish an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy may be recommended when a lesion:

• Persists for more than two weeks without healing

• Has an unusual color, texture, or pattern of growth

• Causes pain or bleeding

• Affects nearby teeth or tissues

• Cannot be confidently identified through an examination alone

Biopsies can help identify or rule out infections, precancerous changes, tumors, and other conditions affecting oral tissues.

The biopsy technique depends on the size, location, and appearance of the lesion. Our goal is to obtain an appropriate tissue sample while preserving surrounding form and function whenever possible.

Most oral biopsies are performed in our office using local anesthesia.

The procedure typically includes:

• Numbing the area and confirming that you are comfortable

• Removing all or part of the tissue that needs to be examined

• Placing a small suture when necessary

• Providing instructions for caring for the biopsy site

• Sending the tissue sample to a pathology lab for analysis

Before you leave, we will explain what to expect during recovery and when you should contact our office with questions or concerns.

Healing varies depending on the biopsy site, the amount of tissue removed, and your overall health. Many biopsy sites heal within approximately one to three weeks.

We schedule follow-up care as needed to evaluate healing and review your pathology results. Lab reports may take anywhere from several days to approximately two weeks, depending on the type of tissue being evaluated and whether additional testing is required.

If the results indicate that additional treatment or evaluation is needed, Dr. Albadawi will explain the findings and discuss the next steps with you. When appropriate, we can also coordinate care with other specialists.

Not every change in the mouth is serious, but persistent or unexplained changes should not be ignored.

Consider scheduling an evaluation if you notice:

• A mouth sore that does not heal

• A lump or growth in the mouth

• An oral lesion that persists or changes

• Unusual red or white areas

• Unexplained bleeding

• Changes in the color or texture of oral tissues

• Persistent pain or tenderness

An examination can help determine whether the area simply needs monitoring or whether additional testing, such as a biopsy, would be appropriate.

Many pathology reports are available within several days to approximately two weeks. The exact timing can vary depending on the type of tissue and whether additional laboratory testing is needed.

Small biopsies inside the mouth generally heal with minimal noticeable scarring. Healing can vary depending on the location and extent of the procedure.
