Bone Grafting in Roseville, CA

Bone grafting can help rebuild areas of the jaw where bone has been lost because of periodontal disease, trauma, or missing teeth. For some patients, it is an important first step before dental implant placement.

At Roseville Oral Surgery Center, Dr. Samer Albadawi and our team evaluate your bone structure, explain your options, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. We use advanced imaging, including CBCT and intraoral scanning, to assess available bone and plan treatment with precision. We also coordinate with your restorative dentist when bone grafting is part of a larger implant or restorative treatment plan.

Why Bone Grafting May Be Recommended

After a tooth is lost or removed, the surrounding jawbone can gradually change in shape and volume. Bone loss can also occur because of periodontal disease, injury, or other factors.

A bone graft adds material to an area where additional bone is needed. Depending on your treatment goals, grafting may help:

  • Build a stronger foundation for dental implants
  • Restore bone volume in an area affected by tooth loss or disease
  • Support the shape and function of the jaw
  • Prepare an area for future restorative treatment

Not everyone who needs a dental implant requires bone grafting. During your consultation, we evaluate the amount and quality of available bone to determine whether a graft is appropriate.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting may be recommended when there is not enough healthy bone to support an implant or another planned treatment.

During your consultation, Dr. Samer Albadawi will examine your mouth, review your medical history, and use imaging to evaluate bone volume and anatomy. Factors such as smoking, certain medications, and uncontrolled medical conditions can affect healing, so we discuss these issues before recommending treatment.

If bone grafting is appropriate, we also explain how it fits into the timing of future implant placement or restorative care.

What Happens During a Bone Grafting Procedure?

Before treatment, we review your medical history, medications, allergies, and preoperative instructions. Local anesthesia is available for comfort, and IV sedation may be offered when appropriate.

During the procedure, grafting material is placed in the area where additional bone is needed and secured to support healing. Graft material may come from your own bone, a donor source, or a synthetic material. We explain the recommended option and what to expect before treatment begins.

In some cases, CBCT imaging, intraoral scanning, and 3D models can help us evaluate the anatomy and plan the graft.

How Long Does a Bone Graft Take to Heal?

Initial recovery is usually much shorter than the time needed for the graft to fully integrate.

Many patients experience swelling and tenderness for several days after treatment and can return to normal daily activities within a few days. The graft itself requires additional time to heal and develop enough support for the next stage of treatment.

The exact timeline depends on factors such as the size and location of the graft, your overall health, and whether dental implant placement is planned afterward. We monitor healing during follow-up visits and let you know when the area is ready for the next step.

Bone Grafting Recovery and Aftercare

Some swelling, soreness, and tenderness are normal after bone grafting. We provide written aftercare instructions and explain what to expect before you leave the office.

Typical home care may include:

  • Brushing gently around the surgical area
  • Eating soft foods for several days
  • Using ice as directed to help manage swelling
  • Taking prescribed or recommended medication as directed
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous activity during early recovery

Many stitches dissolve on their own. If nonresorbable sutures are used, we remove them during a follow-up visit.

If you have questions or concerns during recovery, our team is available to provide guidance.

Planning for Dental Implants After Bone Grafting

When bone grafting is performed in preparation for a dental implant, the graft must heal sufficiently before the implant can be placed.

We use follow-up imaging when appropriate to evaluate graft healing and bone development. Once the area is ready, we coordinate implant placement and the timing of restorations with your dentist.

This step-by-step approach helps ensure that implant planning accounts for your anatomy, healing, function, and final restoration.

Technology Used in Bone Grafting Planning

Our team uses digital tools when they provide a meaningful benefit to treatment planning. CBCT imaging can provide a three-dimensional view of the jaw, while intraoral scanning can help capture the shape of the teeth and surrounding structures.

In selected cases, a 3D-printed model may also be used to help visualize anatomy and treatment planning.

We review relevant images with you so you can better understand the area being treated and the reason behind our recommendations.
